David Gilliland was thrown into the NASCAR Cup Series with no warning in 2006, when Elliott Sadler left the No. 38 Ford and running the season’s 15 remaining races. He has one Cup pole to his credit.
In his first full year in the NASCAR Cup Series, he finished second in the Budweiser Shootout.
Gilliland started out dirt track racing and then moved into the NASCAR AutoZone West Series. He ran full-time in the Southwest Series for two years, and then raced in the Grand National Division in 2005 before moving into the Busch Series the following year.
