David Reutimann started out in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southeast Series in 1997. That was the same year he made his first Busch Series start. Diving deeper into the Busch Series in 2003, he ran seven races, winning his first Busch Series Bud Pole and getting noticed by Darrell Waltrip, who put him in the No. 17 Toyota Tundra for the 2004 season.

In the Craftsman Truck Series, David ran well, winning Rookie of the Year honors in 2004, finishing 14th in the points standings. He followed that by scoring his first career victory in 2005 at Nashville, as well as two Bud Poles that year and a finish of 13th in points.

Finishing third in the Truck Series in 2006 was good enough to catch the attention of a different Waltrip- brother Michael, who was starting his own racing team, Michael Waltrip Racing. While a win has eluded the young team, Reutimann has qualified for the most races out of any of the Waltrip cars and is attempting to crack the top 35 in points.
