Jamie McMurray holds the distinction of being the driver with the fewest starts before his first win in the modern era. He won his first race in the Nextel Cup Series in only his second start at Lowe's Motor Speedway, leading 96 laps of the event. He was substituting for the injured Sterling Marlin.

McMurray was signed on with Chip Ganassi Racing for the next year. In 2003, he won his first career pole, finished 13th in points, and won Rookie of the Year.

Like many other NASCAR drivers, Jamie McMurray's racing career began in go-karts. He has four United States Go-Kart titles as well as one World Go-Karting championship.

In 1992, McMurray began driving NASCAR Late Models. He has raced in the Craftsman Truck Series, the Busch Series, and is now a Cup Series regular. He is one of very few drivers to have won a race in all three of NASCAR's premier series, having done the feat in reverse order- Cup, then Busch, then Truck.

In 2006, McMurray felt that his best shot at a championship would be to drive the Roush Racing car that was vacated that year by Kurt Busch, and joined the Ford team. He finished 25th that season and is now looking even better as the 2007 season is upon us.
