Matt Kenseth grew up in a racing family, his dad buying him his first racecar at the age of 13, a car which Matt had to maintain and work on until he was old enough to drive it.
By the age of 19, Matt Kenseth was racing in the late model series in Wisconsin. He broke the record in the ARTGO Challenge Series, becoming the youngest winner in the series’ history.
Kenseth also become the youngest driver to ever win the Miller Genuine Draft National championship in 1994. He continued to race in a variety of series, including the NASCAR All Pro Series, the Hooters Series, and the ASA Series.
Matt Kenseth made his Busch Series debut in 1997 with Robbie Reiser as his car owner. He made 21 starts that year and came in second for Busch Series Rookie of the Year. In 1998, just his first full year in Busch Series competition, Kenseth finished second in points, had three wins, and made his Cup Series debut, finishing sixth in his one race at Dover Downs.
1999 saw Kenseth join Roush Racing with a five-race schedule in his now-famous No. 17 DeWalt Ford. The very next year, his first racing full time in the Cup Series, Kenseth got his first career victory on that level, in the Coca-Cola 600, no less. He finished 14th in the championship standings, winning him the title of Rookie of the Year.
